Heaven’s Club return with new emotional depth on 2021’s ‘All That Was’ EP. Following 2019’s LP ‘Here There and Nowhere’, ‘All That Was’ finds Heaven’s Club solely between Kenyan born, American multi-instrumentalist singer songwriter Shiv Mehra and co – songwriter Chris Natividad. The two songwriters take Heaven’s Club into further psychedelic territory, conjuring artists like John Lennon and Spacemen 3 to build intricate, traveling melodies.

Mehra comments about the songs dealing with the idea of “Time fading behind us. An increased nostalgia for the past as we experience the dejection of the present evidenced through the oppression of people and the treatment of the Earth.” That dejection is echoed throughout ‘All That Was’, most notably in the back half of the EP where melancholic guitar textures, spare piano and haunted vocals drive home Mehra and Natividad’s vision of hopelessness.  The EP was a ground for musical experimentation leading to Mehra’s work on Deafheaven’s upcoming release ‘Infinite Granite’.

Mixed and mastered by Heaven’s Club alum Andrew Oswald, The EP flows through tongue-in-cheek pop ambiance and astral passages—rich soundscapes that heighten the dreamy despair in these songs. The forward movement from seemingly ambivalent to starkly serious is a principle element of what makes ‘All That Was’ a repeated listening experience.  One that aptly covers the vast emotional reaction of how we see the world today.
